The away defeat leaves the Swiss champions with no points at the bottom of their group standings.

A freak goal put the home side in the lead after 55 minutes when a clearance from inside Basel's penalty area by David Abraham ricocheted off Romagnoli and looped into the far corner of the net.

Sporting's Derlei twice headed against the post before extending the home team's lead in the 86th minute with a low right-footed shot.

"We controlled Sporting's midfield in the first half but then they started to play quicker in the second half," commented Basel trainer Christian Gross. "In the end they deserved the three points."

FC Basel, which lost 2-1 against Shakhtar Donetsk in their first group game, now face the 2006 winners, Barcelona.
