The decision to extend his contract by two years means Hitzfeld will coach the squad at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Hitzfeld, former coach of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in the German league, took over the Swiss side in 2008, and saw them qualify for last year’s World Cup in South Africa.

After a victory in their first World Cup match over eventual champions Spain, the Swiss failed to qualify for the second round.

Switzerland are currently striving to improve their position in the standings of Group G in the qualifications for the Euro 2012. They are in third position with three points behind England (7) and Montenegro (10).

Their next match is against Bulgaria on March 26.
