The federal financing amounts to a total of SFr2.3 million ($2.4 million) annually for the period 2011-2014, which represents a 6.3 per cent rise over the previous period.

Announcing the move in Solothurn where the annual film days are currently taking place, the Federal Culture Office on Friday said that 15 festivals had asked for federal support over the next few years.

The main beneficiary is the international film festival held in Locarno, which will receive SFr1.45 million or 62 per cent of the total. This represents an increase of SFr100,000.

Others benefitting from an increase are the short film festival in Winterthur (+SFr50,000 to SFr100,00), as well as the Neuchâtel Fantastic Film Festival and the Fantoche Animation Film Festival in Baden (both + SFr45,000 to SFr120,000).

The Solothurn Film Festival received SFr330,000 this year, the same amount as in the years 2008-2010.
