The Basel player is still however the clear number one in Switzerland and the only Swiss to be ranked in the top 40.

Davis Cup teammate Michel Kratochvil held onto 43rd position, while both Ivo Heuberger and Marc Rosset moved up the rankings table. Heuberger leapt from 129th to 108th while Rosset clawed back four places to end up 117th.

However, it was bad news for Marc Rosset who slipped down seven places to 130th.

The Australian powerhouse Lleyton Hewitt held onto first place closely followed by Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten in second and Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero in third.

In the women's WTA rankings Switzerland's Martina Hingis was placed fifth behind the likes of Belgium's Kim Clijsters and America's Lindsay Davenport.

Venus Williams occupied top spot for the first time in her career making fellow American, Jennifer Capriati, make do with second.
