With the victory late on Wednesday, Federer avenged a loss when he and Roddick met in the Key Biscayne quarterfinals last year.

Federer's opponent on Friday will be No 3-seeded Novak Djokovic, who beat No 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-4.

A smart backhand pass in the final game helped Federer to his 17th win in 19 games with Roddick. "I got maybe a touch lucky," Federer said of his deuce passing shot. "But I hit it well and came up with a great shot and match point."
