Switzerland's Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka are through to the third round of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne.

Federer, seeded number two, beat Evgeny Korolev of Russia 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 in a second-round match that lasted just 86 minutes.

The Swiss, who is looking to equal Pete Sampras's record of 14 grand slam titles, will now meet Marat Safin, another Russian, in the third round.

Safin beat Federer in a memorable five-set game in the semifinals of the Australian Open before winning the title in 2005.

"I'm happy to be playing Marat; we've fought some battles," Federer said. "We had the epic of 2005."

In another second-round match, Wawrinka defeated Australia's Brydan Klein 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. He now faces Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, who has only lost 13 games in the first two rounds and who beat Wawrinka in their previous encounter.
