European films win prizes at Zurich Film Festival
Serb, German and Danish films have received top prizes at the sixth Zurich Film Festival, which ends on Sunday.
The public’s prize went to a Swiss film by new director Mike Schaerer.
The Woman with a Broken Nose, by Serb director Srdjan Koljevic, Das Lied in Mir, by Florian Cossen and the documentary Armadillo, by the Dane Janus Metz won Golden Icons.
Swiss cinema received public recognition, with an award for Schaerer’s first film Stationspiraten about the friendship of five boys in a cancer ward.
The 11-day festival started on September 23.
It screened some 70 films and highlighted young talent, in particular German-speaking cinema.
This year the Czech director Milos Forman received a tribute for his life’s work.
One year ago the film festival made international headlines after Zurich police acted on a United States warrant and arrested director Roman Polanski who had come to accept a lifetime achievement award.
Polanski spent some ten months in detention, mostly under house arrest in Gstaad, before being freed.
