It has been a major event in the region ever since the trade fair privilege was granted by Emperor Friedrich III in 1471.
The two-week event started with a traditional ceremony, in which bells rang out at midday.
There are 477 stands and rides, including a 60-metre-high big wheel in the Münsterplatz. Also being held are an autumn goods and a wine fair.
