The authorities of canton Schwyz, in central Switzerland, have agreed to co-finance an ambitious theatre project to be performed in summer next year.

The cantonal government said they would pay SFr50,000 ($33,557) toward the overall costs of staging Calderon de la Barcas’ “World Theatre” in the town of Einsiedeln in summer 2000.

The performance had originally been scheduled for 1998 but had to be postponed after author Thomas Hürlimann said he would need more time to rework and adapt the old text.

The government said the financial contribution was meant to underline the cultural importance of the project, both for Einsiedeln and the canton.

The World Theatre performance -- a project staged about every five years -- will involve 500 men, women and children.
