Camping sites less popular in 2010

Swiss camping sites are declining in popularity, registering a 10 per cent drop in overnight stays in 2010 compared with the previous year.

New figures released by the Federal Statistics Office reveal there were 3.3 million overnight stays last year in the 419 campsites surveyed.

Overnight stays in youth hostels declined 0.8 per cent to 545,000 nights in the 56 hostels included in the poll.

Swiss guests account for more than half the visitors in both hostels and camping sites, followed by Germans who spent 141,000 nights in hostels and 559,000 nights in camping sites.
