The Tour de Suisse winner, Camenzind, finished 15 seconds behind the winner, Colombia's Raphael Cardenas, on the 165 kilometre stage between Sabadell and La Molina in the north-east of the country.

However, his compatriot, Alex Zülle, who has won the Spanish tour twice, lost more than six minutes in Monday's stage and finished in 68th place. He has slipped down to the 11th overall position as a consequence of his poor performance - four minutes and 34 seconds behind the overall leader.

Jan Odriozola of Spain finished in second place and another Colombian rider, Viktor Hugo Pena, came fourth.

The Spaniard, Santos Gonzales, who only managed to finish in fifth position on Monday, has, however, replaced his teammate, Abraham Olano, as the overall leader.

Tuesday's stage will bring the tour through the Pyrenees with a 136 kilometre circuit through Andorra, from Alp to Arcalis.
