Spin-offs from ETH Zurich reach record level
The Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) says 2008 was a record for spin-offs, with 23 companies established, surpassing the mark of the previous year.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Institute noted that six firms were created in computer science and communication technologies and in services, and four in biotechnology/pharmaceuticals.
Four were established in electrical and electronics engineering, two in medical devices and one in micro- and nanotechnology.
It noted that spin-offs had won over SFr1 million ($890,000) in national prize money in 2008.
"The innovative strength and motivation of our scientists remains unbroken and ETH Zurich continues to offer great potential for interesting spin-offs," commented Silvio Bonaccio, head of the institute's technology transfer office.
The statement added that 2009 held "much promise, with some spin-offs already in preparation".
