B&Bs grow more popular
Bed and breakfast accommodation in Switzerland is continuing to gain in popularity.
In 2010, the number of nights tourists spent in Swiss B&Bs increased by 9.3 per cent compared with the previous year. For the same period Swiss hotels reported much more modest growth of only 1.7 per cent.
The association Bed and Breakfast Switzerland said on Monday that guests spent 368,862 nights at more than 900 B&Bs across the country last year.
Swiss guests accounted for the lion’s share of B&B guests (45.7 per cent) followed by Germans (20.7 per cent), French (6.4 per cent), Dutch and British (both 3.1 per cent).
The largest number of B&Bs are found in canton Valais (accommodation for 874 people) followed by the Bernese Oberland (705) and the Lake Geneva region (698).
In comparison, Swiss hotels have capacity to accommodate 245,000 guests. And last year, people spent more than 36 million nights in Swiss hotel rooms.
