The move follows the sacking on Wednesday of coach Didier Olle-Nicolle after he led the team to a 4-1 home loss against Thun.

The struggling first division club, which was acquired last week by Chechen oligarch Bulat Chagaev, is two points clear of relegation with three games left to play.

Chagaev’s takeover was officially ratified by the club’s general assembly on Thursday.

In a statement announcing Challandes’ appointment, Xamax said he would lead the team’s training session on Friday morning.

Challandes was coach of the Swiss national under-21 football team before accepting a three-year appointment as coach of FC Zurich in 2007. He was relieved of his most recent position as coach of FC Sion in February because of poor results.
