Safin, number two in the ATP world rankings, won 7-5, 6-4 in their second round match. It was Safin's third victory in as many matches over Bastl.

Bastl went ahead 4-3 in the first set, but Safin then won the next four games. One break of service was enough to win Safin the second set.

Switzerland's remaining player in the tournament, Marc Rosset, takes on Fabrice Santoro of France in the third round on Thursday.
