Although the club had already secured the premiership trophy several weeks ago, its final game against Lugano was an important matter of pride.

And as it turned out, the game was a classic.

In a see-sawing match, Basel managed to turn around a 2:3 deficit into a 4:3 win, giving the team's fans - many thousands of whom had already started celebrating in front of large screens erected in Basel's city centre - another reason to party.

Lugano played fierce attacking football, unwilling to give the premiers an easy win in their final game.

In other final-round games, the Grasshoppers missed an opportunity to finish on a high ahead of their UEFA Cup campaign, recording a draw 3:3 against St Gallen.

Zürich finished its season fifth overall after dispatching Servette 1:0, while Bern's Young Boys were disappointed with a 3:1 loss to Sion.
