Australian wins Tour de Romandie
Australian cyclist Cadel Evans has won the 65th edition of the Tour de Romandie UCI ProTour road race.
British sprinter Ben Swift won the final 164.6-kilometre stage from Champagne to Geneva on Sunday.
Evans came in ahead of German Tony Martin and Kazakhstan’s Alexandre Vinokourov to win the six-day, 700-kilometre road race around French-speaking Switzerland for the second time. He first won in 2006.
“It’s a course which I like, I am always happy to win here,” Evans told Swiss television after the race.
The Tour de Romandie was Evans’ first event after injuring his knee in a training session earlier this year. He said training for the Tour de France, in which he placed second in 2008, was now his main priority.
Evans rides for Swiss bicycling manufacturer BMC Racing, and lives in Switzerland when training.
