The widely anticipated rise in the price of a cup of coffee in Switzerland has failed to materialise, according to a new survey.

Last December, the Swiss Coffee Federation warned that the price of the country's staple hot beverage would rise by as much as 15 per cent as a result of an increase in wage costs.

But according to a survey published by the weekly trade magazine, "Expresso", there has not been a significant increase in the price of an early morning caffeine fix.

Survey results indicate that only a little over a third of Swiss cafés and tea rooms have increased the price of their coffee since the end of last year.

Those establishments which have raised their prices have only done so by between 10 and 20 centimes per cup.

Last year, the federation warned that a cup of coffee could rise by as much as 50 centimes.

The average price of a cup of coffee in a Swiss restaurant still hovers around SFr3.40 ($2), but the Swiss Coffee Federation does not rule out the possibility of price rises in the future.
